Amerikaanse gouverneur tekent wet tegen abortus
CHICAGO - Gouverneur Mike Rounds van South Dakota heeft maandag een wet getekend, waardoor abortus in zijn staat vrijwel onmogelijk wordt. Met de maatregel wil Rounds de discussie over abortus in de Verenigde Staten opnieuw leven inblazen.
De Republikein Rounds noemde de wet een "frontale aanval" op Roe versus Wade, de zaak waarin abortus 33 jaar geleden werd gelegaliseerd door het Amerikaanse hooggerechtshof. Pogingen van conservatief religieuze groeperingen om deze beslissing terug te draaien zijn sindsdien mislukt. Maar onder president Bush zijn het afgelopen jaar twee nieuwe conservatieve rechters in het hooggerechtshof benoemd die zich in het verleden tegen abortus hebben uitgesproken. Rounds verwacht dat de anti-abortuswet uiteindelijk wordt aangevochten bij de hoogste federale rechtbank en dat de conservatieve opperrechters het recht op abortus dan zullen terugdraaien.
Met de nieuwe wet in South Dakota wordt abortus in vrijwel alle gevallen verboden. Ook als een vrouw zwanger is geworden na een verkrachting of door incest. Alleen als een zwangere vrouw in levensgevaar is, mag een einde aan de zwangerschap worden gemaakt.
De conservatieve staat telt momenteel één abortuskliniek.

Had ik het vorige keer niet over Bill Hicks? De standupper die in 1994 overleed, maar nog niks aan kracht heeft ingeboet. Wat hij zei over de prolifebeweging:
